AIIMS Bhopal Saves Life By Treating Ruptured Brain Aneurysm Through Pinhole Wrist Procedure

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): AIIMS, Bhopal treated a patient with a ruptured complex brain aneurysm using a minimally invasive pinhole procedure through the wrist—eliminating the need for open brain surgery.

A 60-year-old female patient presented with a subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by a ruptured complex basilar artery aneurysm. She was referred to the Interventional Radiology Treatment Centre at AIIMS Bhopal, where a multidisciplinary team advised an endovascular procedure called stent-assisted coiling.

This sophisticated treatment involved the insertion of a catheter through a tiny pinhole in a small artery in the patient’s wrist. With high precision, the team of Interventional Radiologists navigated the catheter to the aneurysm site in the brain.

A small stent was deployed, and the aneurysm was filled with micro-coils, effectively securing the weakened artery without the need for large incisions. The patient recovered well and was discharged in stable condition within a few days.
