Mumbai Indians haven't played an IPL final since their success in the 2020 edition. The IPL has since expanded to 10 teams, further increasing competition. When quizzed on the competition an MI's drought, head coach Mahela Jayawardene used it as an opportunity to take at their next IPL 2026 opponents Delhi Capitals, who remain without a title since the league began in 2008.
"I think the results will take care of itself. Rather than putting ourselves under pressure at the beginning of the season, saying we haven't won it for 4 years. But there are some teams who haven't won it forever as well. So we are not rubbing it in," Jayawardene said in his pre-match press conference.
Incidentally, Mumbai Indians' last IPL title win came after they defeated the Delhi Capitals in 2020. It was their 5th title, now the joint-most by a franchise in IPL history. That final was the closest Delhi have come to lifting the trophy, with that defeat in Dubai being their only appearance in a summit clash.
