Praggnanandhaa plied his trade against Carlsen with white pieces and cornered the world champion to the extent of forcing him to resign at the end of 43 moves, defeating him for the second time in quick succession. The previous win also came in the United States of America (USA) in the classification games when a spot for quarter-final was on the line.
Although Praggnanandhaa had lost to Fabiano Caruana, he survived one round more than Carlsen had managed to. Carlsen, 34, had lost to American Levon Aronian to be knocked out of title race early in the event.
"I didn’t enjoy the whole process of just being pretty isolated" - Magnus Carlsen
Speaking on his poor outing, Carlsen felt not being able to spend time with his wife and coach Peter Heine Nielsen between rounds made him feel disintegrated. Explaining the complete collapse of nervous system, he said, as quoted by News18:
"I think it started well on Day 1. I felt all right, relatively rested, at least compared to other days. And then I don’t know, I didn’t enjoy the whole process of just being pretty isolated there for many, many hours and not being able to talk to coach Peter Heine Nielsen or my wife, between rounds and not being able to use my devices and so on. What happened then was just kind of a complete collapse of my nervous system. I could have scraped through, of course, with some help, but it would have been completely underserved."
