VIDEO: Water In Pune's Bhatghar Dam Turns Green, Samples Sent For Testing

The water in the Bhatghar Dam in Pune district has suddenly turned green over the past few days, causing concern among local residents. The change has been noticed especially in the mornings and lasts until noon.

The green color has been observed along the northern banks of the dam and in nearby areas like Sangamner, Malwadi, and Narhe villages. The dam supplies drinking water to several villages, including Bhor city. This has raised doubts among people about the safety of the water.

Local citizens claim that private fish farming is being carried out in the dam, and the fish are being fed with high-nitrogen food. This, they believe, is leading to the growth of algae, which is turning the water green.

Taking the matter seriously, administration has ordered that water samples be sent for lab testing. The concerned departments have also been directed to take immediate action to remove the algae from the water.

Vikash Kharat, Sub-Divisional Officer, Bhor, said, "Excess nitrogen in water can lead to the overgrowth of algae, causing the water to turn green. When excess nitrogen and other nutrients enter a water body, they act as fertilizers for algae, causing them to multiply rapidly. However, there is nothing to worry about — it is not hazardous to humans or any living beings. Near the dam, fishermen are engaged in pisciculture and they sprinkle food into the water. The excess fish feed, which is rich in nitrogen, has led to the green coloration of the water. We have collected water samples and sent them for testing. The reports will arrive in two days. Meanwhile, there is no cause for concern — no health-related issues have been reported, and the water is safe to consume."

Meanwhile, the administration is monitoring the situation and has advised people to stay alert until test results confirm that the water is safe for use.
