Pune Rural Police had to lob tear gas shells to restore law and order after two groups clashed on Friday afternoon in Yavat in Pune’s Daund tehsil over a social media post.
A major tension broke out between two groups in Yavat village on Friday morning, following an alleged offensive post shared on social media.
The incident occurred between 10 and 11 AM, after a young man allegedly shared an objectionable post in a WhatsApp group. The post quickly triggered outrage among residents, leading to clashes between two groups.
According to sources, an angry mob began pelting stones and set tyres on fire at various spots in the village. The house of the youth who made the post was also targeted with stones, further escalating the fear and chaos in the area.

Upon receiving the information, Yavat police rushed to the spot and used tear gas shells to disperse the mob. A heavy police force has now been deployed in the village to maintain law and order.
Senior police officers are present at the scene and are making continuous efforts to bring the situation under control. At present, the village remains under tense calm, and police have appealed to citizens to maintain peace and show restraint.
Sandip Singh Gill, Superintendent of Police (Pune Rural), visited the site and urged people to maintain calm.
He also warned against the spreading of rumours.
