Rising Farmer Suicides In Hingoli: 16 Cases Reported In 3 Months |
The financial condition of the farmers in Hingoli district is deteriorating due to drought and heavy rain situations, and they are financially overburdened with debt. The incidents of farmers’ suicides are on the rise. In the past three months, 16 cases of farmers’ suicides were reported between January 1, 2025, and March 31, 2025. Five farmers killed themselves by suicide in January, five in February, and six in March.
Farmers take loans from financial institutions or private money lenders for purchasing seeds and fertilizers. However, they incur heavy losses due to natural calamities like drought and rainfall. As a result, they cannot pay the loan installments and end up with huge debt. Such conditions have prevailed in the district for the past few years, leading to an increase in farmer suicides. The past three months alone saw 16 farmers kill themselves by suicide, which is a grave concern for the government.
The government provides financial aid to the family members of the deceased farmers. However, out of the 16 farmers, the family members of only nine farmers have received government aid so far. Each family has received Rs 1 lakh, but the proposals of the remaining seven families are still pending. It is important for the government to take drastic measures to stop farmer suicides by effectively implementing schemes like crop insurance and subsidies, residents have demanded.
