Mumbai: Minor fire at Mankhurd scrapyard, no casualties; watch video

Mumbai: A level 2 fire broke out in Scrapyard in Mankhurd, 20 feet road, Mandala area on Thursday, No loss of life has been reported. The fire has caused damage to at least eight shops in the area. According to residents, fire incidents have become regular incidents in the scrapyards.

Eight fire engines, four Jumbo tankers, and ambulances were pressed into service to douse the flames.

Fire brigade chief Hemant Parab said, “We have observed frequent fire incidents in the area. On Thursday when the fire broke out, our fire engines reached the spot immediately and doused the fire within three hours. The exact cause of the fire has not been ascertained yet but we will talk to the local residents to find out the reason. The procedure will take time.”

Parab said the fire intensified due to the presence of flammable objects like wood, plastic, and polythene sheets.”

Om Prajapati, a local resident said, “At around 10:30 am I was on the roof of my house when I saw smoke emanating from the scrap yard. Suddenly, an iron cover that looked like a small cylinder which is generally used for welding work tossed up near me. Later, I started evacuating my house and shifting my family members to a safer place.”

Another resident Rajan Patwa said, “Fire incidents are regular here. its the fourth fire in this area. I suspect the owner must have set his scrapyard on fire. He is absconding now. As per my information, there was steel material inside the scrapyard. The fire brigade personnel were prompt to reach the spot within 20 minutes and control the fire. If the fire would have broken out in the night, it would have been more horrible.”
