No Honk Wednesdays: All you need to know about new campaign by Mumbai Traffic Police

To curb noise pollution arising out of unnecessary honking, the traffic police has planned to conduct a special ‘NoHonkDay’ campaign every Wednesday.

During the said campaign, police inspectors from all the traffic divisions in Mumbai will organise a full day ‘No Honking Day’ every Wednesday within their jurisdiction. It will display a no honking sign or banner to motorists stopped at the signal. At the same time, they will provide guidance and counselling to the drivers for not honking without reason. In order to take legal action against the drivers violating no honking rules, challan action will be initiated against them.

An official from the traffic control department said, "The main areas where this No Honking drive will take place will mostly be in the areas which have either schools, colleges or hospitals in their vicinity. People should follow the rules and not honk unnecessarily as it causes noise pollution and inconvenience to people." Volunteers, NGOs and anyone who wants to participate can approach their local police inspectors from the traffic divisions. There are many places with a lot of traffic throughout the city. Therefore, this is a good initiative which will help decrease the noise pollution levels of the city and make it more livable, the official added.

The traffic department has also shared their helpline number, 8454999999, for any queries regarding ‘NoHonkDay’.

A special awareness campaign against unnecessary honking by motor vehicles drivers was also organised by the traffic police on Sunday. This awareness campaign took place at several locations, including Andheri, Bandra, Sakinaka, Mumbai Central and Borivali. The traffic police used posters, banners and mobile van speakers. The people were informed about the ill-effects of unnecessary honking, which leads to noise pollution, increased blood pressure and other health problems.
