Thane:A 51-year-old former Army personnel was taken into custody on Thursday morning following a violent shooting in the Mumbra area of Thane that left one man dead and two others seriously wounded.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 AM near Sumantai Chavan Hindi Primary School in the Kailash Nagar locality, Mumbra Bypass. The accused, identified as Jayan Shivanandan Nair, allegedly opened fire on a group of men following a personal dispute that had reportedly been brewing for several days.

About The Incident

According to preliminary police reports, the altercation originated from allegations of harassment involving Nair’s foster sister. The dispute escalated on Thursday morning at Bismilla Chawl, where Nair allegedly discharged his firearm, firing approximately five rounds.

The victims were identified as Akbar Abdul Shaikh (29), Abdul Hasan Shaikh (45), and Samir Ahmed Shaikh (32). All three were rushed to Kalsekar Hospital, where Akbar Abdul Shaikh was pronounced dead upon arrival. The other two victims remain under medical supervision with serious injuries.

Police Action and Arrest

Following the shooting, the accused attempted to flee the scene but was intercepted and apprehended by local authorities. The weapon used in the offense has been seized for forensic examination.

Senior officials, including the Joint Commissioner of Police, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), and the DCP of the Crime Branch, arrived at the site shortly after the incident to oversee the investigation. A forensic team was also deployed to the crime scene to collect ballistic evidence and map the sequence of events.

Official Statement

"The accused has been taken into custody along with the weapon used in the crime," a senior police official stated. "While the primary motive appears to be a dispute over the alleged harassment of a relative, we are conducting a thorough investigation to rule out any other underlying factors. An FIR is being registered under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act."

The Mumbra Bypass area remained under heavy police guard throughout the afternoon to maintain law and order. Authorities have appealed to the public to remain calm as the investigation continues.
