Mumbai Local: Standing With Bags At Doors Banned After 4 Killed In Diva-Mumbra Tragedy

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has banned passengers from standing at train doors with bags in Mumbai local trains. This strong move comes after the tragic incident that happened near Diva-Mumbra, where eight passengers fell from moving trains, leading to the death of four commuters and injuring others.

The railway authorities have swung in action following this incident. They have introduced various safety measures to manage the footboard crowding and regulate passenger behaviour. The latest move is likely to be implemented with stricter measures soon, as per reports by Marathi news portal ABP Majha.

1) Passengers will no longer be allowed to stand at the train doors while carrying bags, especially during peak hours.

2) Additional RPF or local police personnel will be deployed at major stations during the evening rush to implement and enforce the new rule.

3) New local trains will have automatic door closure systems, similar to those in Metro trains.

4) Expansion of third and fourth tracks up to Kalyan–Kasara, and fifth and sixth tracks up to Kurla is being fast-tracked.

5) A sixth line upgrade between Thane and CSMT is on the anvil to decongest the existing stretch.

6) Railways has also urged the state government and private sector offices to consider staggered office timings to ease overcrowding during peak hours.
