Maharashtra: Student Injured As Part Of Ceiling Collapses In Washim Zilla Parishad School During Class Amid Heavy Rains

Washim: In yet another glaring example of the deteriorating condition of Zilla Parishad schools in Maharashtra, a Class 7 student sustained serious injuries after a portion of plaster from the classroom ceiling collapsed during a lecture in Washim district. The incident occurred on Friday at the government-run school in Bhatumra village, amid extreme weather conditions in Washim and other regions of Vidarbha.

Disturbing visuals from the classroom have reportedly surfaced on the internet showing shattered plaster chunks scattered across the floor and school bags on the benches covered in debris. The images have sparked outrage among locals and on social media, calling attention to the poor maintenance of government school buildings.

Part Of Ceiling Collapses During Class

According to reports, the incident took place while a class was in session. Suddenly, a section of plaster from the slab in one corner of the classroom gave way and crashed onto a bench where a student named Shivaji Umale was seated.

Student Sustains Head Injury

The debris struck the student on the head, leaving him injured. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, reported Maharashtra Times. While his condition is now stable, the event has triggered panic among other students and concern among parents regarding the safety of the school building.

Shockingly, the building of the school was constructed only a decade ago. Despite its relatively recent construction, it is already showing signs of major wear and tear, raising questions about construction quality and maintenance oversight.

Heavy Rains Lash Vidarbha Region

Meanwhile, several parts of the Vidharbha region have been receiving heavy rains since past few days. Flood-like situation was experienced in Buldhana, Washim and Yavatmal districts, leaving many roads blocked. The torrential rain that started in Vidarbha continued till late on Thursday and till Friday, causing rivers and drains to flood in Buldhana, Washim and Yavatmal districts.
