Industrialist Anand Mahindra on Wednesday hailed the appointment of senior IAS officer Ashwini Bhide as Mumbai’s first woman civic chief, calling her a 'game-changer' as she took charge as Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

In a post on X, Mahindra praised Bhide’s track record in handling complex infrastructure projects and delivering results under challenging conditions. “Whether it is navigating the complexity of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation or delivering against impossible timelines in one of the world’s most demanding urban environments, Ashwini Bhide is accustomed to being a game-changer,” he said.

Highlighting the significance of her appointment, he added that “making history as Mumbai’s first woman BMC Commissioner is just another milestone for her,” expressing confidence that her future work would define her legacy.

Bhide Took Charge As BMC Chief A Day Ago

Bhide assumed office on Tuesday following the retirement of outgoing Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani on March 31. Alongside her role as civic chief, she has also been given additional charge as Managing Director of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited.

Who Is Ashwini Bhide?

A 1995-batch IAS officer, Bhide is known for her firm and results-driven administrative approach. She was chosen for the top post over several senior bureaucrats, including Sanjay Mukherjee and Aseem Gupta, among others, owing to her extensive experience in executing large-scale infrastructure projects.

Before this elevation, Bhide served as Additional Chief Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office and has been widely recognised for her role in key projects such as the Mumbai Metro Line 3.

Her appointment comes at a crucial time as Mumbai undergoes a major urban transformation, with projects like multiple Metro corridors nearing completion. She takes charge just weeks after the BMC presented its Rs 80,952 crore budget for 2026–27.
