Alcohol dependence is on the rise, with many turning to it as a coping mechanism for stress in their personal and professional lives. However, alcohol consumption has well-documented negative effects on overall health and wellbeing.
While quitting can be challenging, support may come from simple Ayurvedic home remedies. Acharya Balkrishnaji, co-founder of Patanjali Ayurved, recommends incorporating ingredients like ajwain into your routine. The company also offers products designed to support those looking to reduce or quit alcohol consumption.
Why Alcohol?
A major reason behind alcohol dependence is the desire to change one’s emotional state and cope with stress, anxiety, or other mental and emotional challenges. For many, it offers a temporary sense of relaxation or escape.
Societal, cultural, and peer influences can also play a significant role in encouraging alcohol use. Additionally, a family history of drinking may increase the likelihood of developing similar habits. Over time, what begins as occasional consumption can turn into a regular pattern, eventually leading to dependence.
Impact on Health
In Ayurveda, alcohol is considered a tamasic substance. When consumed regularly and in large quantities, it is believed to act like a toxin—weakening immunity, disturbing the balance of doshas (particularly Vata and Pitta), and impairing mental clarity.
On a physical level, excessive alcohol consumption can lead to dehydration, disrupt digestion, and strain the liver. Over time, it may contribute to nutritional deficiencies, frequent headaches, and skin-related concerns. It can also affect cognitive function and increase irritability or anger.
Ayurvedic Solutions to Leaving Alcohol
Acharya Balkrishnaji suggests that a simple remedy to manage alcohol cravings can be found in your kitchen. Carom seeds, commonly known as ajwain, are considered highly beneficial.
He recommends taking 100 grams of ajwain and boiling it in one litre of water until it reduces to about one-third (approximately 200–300 ml). Strain the liquid and store it. Whenever you experience a strong urge to consume alcohol, drink a cup of this preparation. With regular use, it may help in gradually reducing the craving for alcohol.
Use Patanjali Carom Seeds (100 Gms), a premium-quality ajwain that is carefully sourced and handpicked. It has rich and earthy notes and adds an interesting depth of flavour to various dishes. It also provides many health benefits.
Simple Tips to Treat Alcoholism
Herbs: Tulsi is known for its cleansing properties and may help reduce cravings. Amla supports liver health and strengthens immunity, while ginger aids digestion and helps in eliminating toxins. Ashwagandha is often used to ease stress and anxiety, especially those linked to withdrawal, and Brahmi is valued for improving mental clarity and emotional balance.
For liver support, ingredients like aloe vera, punarnava, and kutki are commonly recommended in Ayurveda. Additionally, formulations such as Divya Drakshasava (450 Ml) helps curb alcohol dependency. It is believed to help curb cravings, improve digestion and sleep, boost energy levels, and assist in liver detoxification.
Diet: Include vegetables like leafy greens, carrots, and sweet potatoes in your diet to support liver health, aid natural cleansing, help curb cravings for sugary alcoholic drinks, and maintain steady energy levels. Adding nuts and seeds can promote a feeling of fullness, which may reduce the urge to drink.
Berries such as strawberries and raspberries contain beneficial nutrients that support brain health and help improve mood. Regular consumption of Patanjali Mamra Almond Gold (250 Gms and 500 Gms) can also be helpful. Rich in potassium, calcium, zinc, iron, vitamins E, B2, and B3, along with antioxidants and dietary fibre, it helps replenish energy levels, supports the nervous system, may ease anxiety, and promotes better sleep.
Lifestyle: Incorporate practices like yoga and meditation into your daily routine to help relax the body and support natural detoxification. Establishing a consistent schedule for meals, sleep, and exercise can further stabilise both physical and mental wellbeing, promoting clarity and balance. It is also important to identify personal triggers that lead to the urge to drink, so they can be managed more effectively.
Overcoming dependence requires awareness, discipline, and the right support system. Ayurveda offers a holistic approach, and products from Patanjali Ayurved may be used as supportive aids alongside healthier lifestyle choices.
