Indore News: High Court Summons Top Officials Over BRTS, Traffic Woes

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Thursday pulled up authorities over continued traffic congestion in the city and sought strict compliance with its earlier directions, particularly in relation to the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridor.

The court summoned the Indore collector, municipal commissioner and senior traffic officials to remain personally present on the next date of hearing on April 20 to apprise the court of progress made on the ground.

Hearing a batch of petitions, a division bench of Justice Vijay Kumar Shukla and Justice Alok Awasthi reviewed the progress made in easing traffic bottlenecks across key junctions.

During the hearing, a member of the court-appointed committee apprised the bench of the ongoing removal of bus stops along the BRTS corridor, an issue central to the petitions concerning traffic mismanagement in Indore.

Taking note of the update, the court directed all concerned authorities and committees to submit the latest status report in light of previous orders and adjourned the matter for further hearing.

Senior Advocate Ajay Bagadiya informed the court about a recent traffic jam at Navlakha Square, alleging that authorities have failed to strictly implement the High Court s earlier directions issued in October 2019.

The 2019 order mandated several measures to ensure smooth traffic flow, including keeping traffic signals operational round the clock, deploying traffic personnel at major intersections during peak hours and taking concrete steps to prevent congestion, especially in the evening.

Expressing concern, the bench directed the deputy commissioner of police (traffic) to ensure strict adherence to these directions.
