Lucknow: Doctors and engineers at King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, have developed a patented device to aid in urine collection from infants. Named the IFT Uro Bag Connector, the device allows accurate and hygienic connection between pediatric catheters and urine bags.
The device was jointly developed by Pediatric Surgery Department Head Dr. J.D. Rawat, Dr. Anand Pandey, and engineer Sumit Kumar Vaishya. Dr. Rawat stated that previously, catheters were often attached to urine bags using adhesive materials, leading to spillage and inaccurate measurement.
The new connector enables precise measurement of urine output over 24 hours, essential for diagnosing conditions in infants. Dr. Pandey noted that many newborns suffer from congenital disorders, for which regular urine analysis is necessary. Existing methods posed challenges due to leakage and improper attachment.
Engineer Vaishya added that the connector allows infant feeding tubes to be linked with larger urine collection bags, improving functionality. The design has officially received patent protection.
