Kolkata: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday had held a meeting with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari along with Gorkha leaders in Sukna in north Bengal.
Committee Formed To Draft Final Gorkha Agreement, Says BJP MP
Talking to the media, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Darjeeling MP Raju Bista mentioned that a committee has been constituted by the central government to draft the final agreement on the Gorkha issues.
“A committee has been formed under the Ministry of Home Affairs under the leadership of interlocutor Pankaj Kumar Singh. It will finalize the agreement for today's meeting. Today’s meeting is historic as on this same date the Gorkha accord in 1988 was signed,” said Bista.
Meeting Held On Historic Date Linked To 1988 Gorkha Accord
Notably, the meeting was held to find a permanent political solution to the long-standing problems of the people of the hills.
“The problems faced by the people of the hills span over four decades. Over 2000 people got martyred and nearly 5000 women were tortured and raped. The Left Front and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) governments did nothing. After hearing the problems of different stakeholders, the Chief Minister agreed to address the issues and the Home Minister summed the meeting by a roadmap to solve the problems,” further added the BJP Darjeeling MP.
Besides CM Adhikari, also present at the meeting were Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) chief Bimal Gurung, and the party's senior leader Roshan Giri, GNLF chief Mann Ghisingh and others.
