Pakistan’s federal government has authorised the deployment of three companies of the Pakistan Army in Rawalpindi for six months to perform “sensitive security duties”, amid heightened security concerns in the city. The deployment was authorised under Article 245 of the Constitution following a request from the Punjab Home Department, Dawn reported.

Troops To Support Civil Administration

According to an Interior Ministry notification dated August 21, the troops will be deployed with immediate effect to help prevent any “undesirable situation” and respond effectively to unforeseen circumstances, based on the requirements of the district administration. Article 245 permits the armed forces to operate in aid of civil power.

The three army companies will assist the Rawalpindi administration in maintaining law and order, strengthening security at sensitive locations and key roads, and responding to any untoward incidents. Some reports have put the strength of the deployment at more than 400 personnel.

Security Concerns Near GHQ Area

The decision comes days after an armed attack near the area surrounding the Pakistan Army’s General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. On or around August 11, an armed man reportedly opened fire on a military vehicle, killing a soldier before being neutralised.

While some reports linked the attacker to political affiliations, the concerned party denied the allegation. The government’s notification, however, does not identify the incident as the sole reason for the latest deployment.

Six-Month Deployment Ordered

The authorities have described the move as a precautionary security measure rather than a response to any confirmed large-scale unrest or ongoing crisis in Rawalpindi. The notification specifically empowers the troops to support the district administration in dealing with potential security threats and unforeseen situations.

The exact locations where the army personnel will be stationed have not been publicly specified. The deployment will remain in effect for six months unless modified or withdrawn earlier by the authorities.
