Mumbai, April 1: Palaash Mapara (5 points) continued with his impressive winning performance and scored his fifth win on the trot to take the sole lead at the top. Playing on the top board with black pieces, Palaash showed his intelligence to outsmart Punit Dodiya (4 points) at the end of the fifth round of the All India Chess Masters (Season 3), played at the Mumbai Chess Centre, Pedder Road, on Wednesday.

Five contenders, Shriram Mhasane, Pratik Yadnik, Yashraj Rathi, AGM Rajveer Nahar and Shreyansh Somaiya, all with 4.5 points each, closely follow the leader in joint second place.

Yashraj Rathi (4.5) and Pratik Yadnik (4.5) shared a point as they played out a draw on the second board.

Shreyansh Somaiya and AGM Rajveer Nahar, both playing with black pieces, recorded fluent wins. Shreyansh defeated Ahaan Kataruka (3.5 points) on the third board, while Rajveer got the better of Shrirang Agharkar (3.5 points) on the fifth board.

On the sixth board, Mhasane outwitted Anay Banka (3.5 points) to claim a full point.
