With horrific crimes being reported on a daily basis in Pune — the cultural capital of Maharashtra — netizens are comparing it to Gotham, the fictional city from Batman notorious for its corruption and rampant crime.
Recently, when the Indian team, led by skipper Rohit Sharma, won the Champions Trophy by four wickets in a closely-fought final against New Zealand in Dubai, celebrations erupted across the country, including Pune. However, on the very same night, a young man was stabbed on Fergusson College Road amid the celebrations. Reportedly, the young man was severely injured after he was stabbed by a gang during a brawl.
After the video went viral on social media, Shivajinagar MLA Siddharth Shirole said that the accused had been arrested. "Action has been taken. I have spoken to the Honorable Commissioner of Police @CPPuneCity and perpetrators were arrested last night itself," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Meanwhile, netizens criticized the law and order situation in Pune. "Pune is worse than Gotham at this point. Asking those who call out the utter callousness of the law and order situation of the city to go somewhere else is not the solution. If we don't demand accountability from those we elected today, this might very well happen to us tomorrow," said a user.
"Pune is becoming a crime capital; the city once looked up as an educational hub and exploration of culture, theatre and art seems like the days of the past," commented another user.
"Situation in Pune is going out of hand with every passing day," wrote a third user.
