Nashik: Ahead of the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, Member of Parliament Rajabhau Waje has raised serious concerns in the Lok Sabha over potential cybersecurity threats linked to the AI-based CCTV and traffic surveillance system planned for the event. He said that while the advanced system is expected to strengthen security arrangements, any cyber vulnerability in the mechanism could turn it into a major threat to national security.
Waje pointed out that the proposed system will include facial recognition, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), AI-based analytics, and a centralised command and control centre. This infrastructure will enable close monitoring of movement across the city. However, he warned that any cyberattack or unauthorised access could result in the leakage of highly sensitive information such as real-time crowd movement, security deployment details, and VVIP routes.
He further emphasised that the Kumbh Mela is a globally significant religious gathering expected to host crores of devotees, saints, foreign visitors, and dignitaries. In such a situation, any data breach would not remain a local issue but would directly impact national security.

In this context, Waje urged the Central Government to take immediate preventive measures. He demanded a national-level cybersecurity audit of the entire surveillance infrastructure, inspection through the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC), and independent penetration testing. He also called for secure storage of all data servers within India and restrictions on the use of vulnerable foreign components in critical systems. Additionally, he proposed the establishment of a dedicated cyber monitoring mechanism for the Kumbh Mela under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
“The AI-based surveillance system being established for the Nashik Kumbh Mela can be extremely useful for security. However, without proper cyber protection, it could become the biggest weak link in national security. The precautions taken today will guarantee the safety of tomorrow,” Waje said.
He also highlighted several potential risks associated with the system. These include the risk of hacking, which could allow unauthorised access to CCTV networks and the command centre. There is also the danger of sensitive data leakage, including information on crowd movement, security deployment, and VVIP routes. He warned about possible AI manipulation, which could lead to wrong identification and allow criminals to escape detection. He pointed out the risks linked to foreign components, including data leakage outside the country and possible backdoor vulnerabilities. Other concerns include system failure that could disrupt the entire network, tampering of CCTV feeds leading to fake or altered visuals, and insider misuse resulting in internal data leaks or abuse.
Waje reiterated that strong safeguards, strict monitoring, and a secure technological framework are essential to ensure the safety, smooth management, and success of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
