New Delhi: The next Chief Minster (CM) of Delhi is expected to take oath on Thursday, February 20, at 4:30 PM, as per media reports. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at a gala event attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) bigwigs.
The BJP made a historical comeback in the national capital after 27 years by defeating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections.
While the party has not yet announced the name of the next CM, reports suggest that the decision is likely to be taken during its legislative meeting on February 19, as per NDTV.
Who Are The Potential Candidates?
Former MP Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, who contested the Delhi Assembly election from the New Delhi constituency against former AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, is one of the potential key candidates. Verma defeated Kejriwal with 4,089 votes, securing 30,088 votes, as per the Election Commission data.
Other potential candidates to take over the CM's seat include BJP leader Vijendra Gupta, who contested from Rohini, and Harish Khurana, the son of former Delhi CM and senior BJP leader Madan Lal Khurana, who won the Moti Nagar constituency.
How Does BJP Pick Their CM?
As per the party's norm, the BJP appoints observers from its central leadership prior to the legislature party meeting. These observers meet with the newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to gather their feedback and insights, which are then shared with the central leadership. This information plays a key role in finalizing the name of the CM before the official oath-taking ceremony takes place.
As of now, there has been no official announcement from the BJP for the CM candidate. The venue for the swearing-in ceremony has not been confirmed yet, but media reports suggest two locations in consideration. One possibility is the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in South Delhi, while the other option is Ramlila Maidan in Old Delhi, a well-known site for political events. However, the BJP is yet to release any official word regarding the CM's selection or the final venue for the ceremony.
The results for the 2025 Delhi Assembly election were announced on February 8.
