Vision 2030: BMC promises better waste management in Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched 'Vision 2030', an action plan to improve waste management in the city over the next 10 years to make Mumbai the cleanest city globally. The management of solid waste has always been a big challenge for the civic body with the city currently generating 5,500 metric tonnes of garbage per day. According to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, the corporation needs to achieve waste management at the source, reducing the dependability on dumping grounds.

Acting on it, the BMC made it mandatory for bulk waste generators like housing societies or commercial establishments having an area of more than 20,000 square metres or generating 100 kg waste daily to treat their waste at their premises. However, 50 per cent of the bulk generators are still not processing their own garbage. The civic body conducted an online survey last year to involve citizens in preparing an action plan to improve waste management in the city. 'Vision 2030' was drafted based on the feedback gained from the survey.

Vision 2030 recommends the installation of policy guidelines and Standard operating procedures (SOPs) for decentralised waste management, segregation of dry and wet waste at ward level, reduced dependency on dumping grounds and upgraded toilet facilities.

“Each area in the city has different challenges and we are considering area-specific waste management plans,” said a civic official. Meanwhile, additional municipal commissioner Dr Sanjeev Kumar said, “Vision 2030 will act as a roadmap for waste management in the city.”
