Sewri-Worli Connector Project: Girders Successfully Launched Over Railway Tracks, Marking Key Milestone
A special self-powered driven trolley for shifting girders on the Sewri ROB has been developed. The construction of the Sewri Road Over Bridge (ROB) has reached a significant milestone with the successful launching of two girders over the Sewri Road section, completed within a two-hour railway power and traffic block recently. Process of launching of rest girder is underway. This road over bridge is part of the Sewri – Worli Elevated Connector Project.

"The Sewri ROB, set to be one of the tallest road over bridges in Mumbai, is located near Sewri Railway Station. It spans 39.705 meters over the Eastern Freeway and Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) Ramp, and 41.875 meters over the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) and Harbour Railway Track. With eight girders in total, the launching work is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed within a month. The overall bridge construction is on track for completion by June," said an official.
"The construction of the Sewri ROB has required cutting-edge engineering solutions. The height difference between the pier cap and the ground level is 21 meters, exceeding conventional construction standards and demanding meticulous execution," he said.
According to Maharail, one of the biggest challenges was the blind spot obstruction caused by the Eastern Freeway and MTHL ramp, making girder placement difficult for crane operators. To counter this, a high-capacity 800 MT single crane was deployed, supported by skilled signalmen to ensure precise girder alignment. Despite these complexities, all eight girders were successfully erected in just three days, reflecting efficient planning and execution.

The Sewri ROB will serve as a four-lane bridge, seamlessly connecting Cotton Green and Sewri Station on the Harbour Line, improving traffic movement between Mumbai's Eastern and Western corridors. The railway portion of the bridge is being executed by Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), further enhancing the city's integrated rail and road infrastructure.
