Mumbai: Two labourers lost their lives and three others were injured after a portion of soil and mud collapsed during foundation and piling work at a construction site in Byculla West on Saturday afternoon.

Civic officials confirmed that the injured workers have been admitted to Nair Hospital and are currently in stable condition. The BMC has issued a stop work notice to the construction work on the site.

Incident Occurred During Redevelopment Work at Habib Mansion

The incident occurred around 2:30 pm at Haines Road, Byculla West, where redevelopment work was underway at Habib Mansion. The BMC's Building Proposal Department had issued an Intimation of Disapproval (IOD) for the redevelopment work of the building. On Saturday, while labourers were engaged in foundation and piling activities, a section of loose soil caved in, trapping the workers.

Five Workers Rescued; Two Declared Dead on Arrival

Five labourers were removed from debris at a construction site and rushed to BMC’s Nair Hospital. Tragically, Rahul (30) and Raju (28) were declared dead on arrival. The remaining three—Sajid Ali (25), Sobat Ali (28), and Lal Mohamad (18)—are undergoing treatment and are reported to be stable.

“We were informed about the incident after the injured were admitted to the civic-run hospital. We immediately visited the site, inspected the excavation work, and documented the scene with photographs. Stop-work notices have been issued for negligence, and the police are conducting a further investigation,” said a civic official.
