Mumbai Rains: Heavy Downpour Brings Smog, Low Visibility In City; IMD Issues Red & Orange Alert Across Maharashtra (VIDEO)

Mumbai: Mumbai experienced a dramatic shift in weather this week and also heavy rains lashed the city on Thursday evening, leaving behind smoggy skies and reduced visibility on Friday morning. Mumbaikars woke up to a dense layer of smog, particularly affecting areas like Juhu Chowpatty and Marine Lines.

Following the downpour that marked the onset of pre-monsoon activity in the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more wet weather ahead. According to their latest report, Mumbai is expected to see a generally cloudy sky with heavy rain today.

The change in weather brought both relief and caution. While the cool breeze and light showers made Marine Drive a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, authorities have urged residents to stay safe as more intense weather conditions are predicted in the coming days.

Tourists and residents were seen walking on the iconic Marine Drive, enjoying the pleasant shift in temperature. The gentle rain and refreshing winds provided a welcome respite from the recent heat and humidity, though visibility remained a concern due to lingering smog.

Red & Orange Alerts Issued For Areas In Maharashtra

The IMD has issued a red alert for Raigad district for May 23 and Ratnagiri for May 22 and 23, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. Additionally, an orange alert remains in effect for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Sindhudurg, and the ghat areas of Pune and Satara. These areas may experience heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.

As the city transitions into the monsoon season, residents are advised to prepare for potentially severe weather. The rains, while bringing relief from summer heat, also raise concerns about flooding and traffic disruptions in the days to come.

Why Is It Raining In May?

The Mumbai Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a warning regarding the formation of cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea. This may result in rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in the region until May 24.

According to Shubhangi Bhute from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Maharashtra, including Mumbai, is expected to experience increased rainfall, with the possibility of heavy downpours and wind speeds reaching 30-40 km/h or even higher in some areas over the coming days.
