Mumbai: The long-awaited Carnac Bunder bridge at Masjid Bunder is set to open for traffic this week, following clearance from Central Railway on Tuesday. The 154-year-old bridge was demolished in November 2022 after being declared unsafe in a structural audit. Once opened, it is expected to ease traffic congestion in South Mumbai.
154-Year-Old Original Structure Demolished in 2022 After Audit Declared It Unsafe
Built in 1868, the Carnac Bunder Bridge is a vital link between South Mumbai and the eastern suburbs, connecting to the Eastern Freeway and Mumbai Trans Harbour Link. Closed to heavy vehicles since 2014 due to structural concerns, the bridge’s reconstruction was repeatedly delayed—primarily due to the Hancock Bridge work and local encroachments.
After extended deadlines, the main construction of the bridge was completed on June 10, and a load test was conducted on June 15. However, the opening delayed due to need of clearance from the Railways. On Tuesday the BMC finally received NOC from the railways. Additional municipal commissioner (projects) Abhijeet Bangar confirmed the development.
New Bridge Features 70-Metre Steel Superstructure With Four Lanes
The newly built bridge, constructed at a cost of Rs 60 crore, features a 70-metre-long, 9.5-metre-wide steel superstructure. Unlike the old two-lane bridge, the new structure will accommodate four vehicular lanes, ensuring smoother traffic flow.
