Mumbai: Father-Son Duo Booked For Defrauding Diamond Merchant Of ₹1.2 Crore At BKC

Mumbai: The Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) police have registered an FIR against a father-son duo for allegedly defrauding a diamond merchant of Rs 1.2 crore. The accused, Kishore Abhangi, 51, and Maulik Abhangi, 30, are diamond clients from Surat, Gujarat. The case was filed on December 13.

According to the police, the complainant, Gaurav Kothari, 33, a resident of Tilaknagar, Chembur, works as a sales manager at Diamondtine Company, a diamond trading firm located in Bharat Diamond Bourse in BKC.

On the afternoon of May 29, 2024, the accused father and son, along with diamond broker Ravi Lodalia, visited the company’s office and claimed they had a client interested in purchasing diamonds.

The Abhangi duo gained Kothari’s trust by pretending that the client company required high-quality diamonds. They obtained 293.70 carats of cut and polished diamonds, worth Rs 1.2 crore, from Kothari on a receipt. However, the two failed to either pay for the diamonds or return the stone.

Eventually, Kothari approached the BKC police and lodged a complaint. Following this, the police registered a case under sections 409 (breach of trust), 420 (cheating), and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code for cheating.
