Mumbai: The last standing section of Mumbai's Elphinstone Road bridge was dismantled overnight on Saturday after authorities removed the final 132-metre stretch over active Central Railway tracks between Parel and Currey Road stations.
Work was carried out across two consecutive nights — Friday and Saturday — between 12.30 am and 4.30 am, under special traffic and power blocks issued by Central Railway. "Special traffic and power blocks for dismantling the panels of Elphinstone Road Over Bridge between Parel and Currey Road stations have been issued for Thursday-Friday and Friday-Saturday nights," a Central Railway officer had said. Few outstation trains were diverted between Matunga and Byculla, with a double halt at Dadar on Friday night.

Built in 1913 by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway and closed to vehicular traffic in September 2025, the bridge has been demolished to pave the way for MMRDA's 4.5-km Sewri-Worli Elevated Corridor. MRIDC, a joint venture of the Maharashtra government and Ministry of Railways, is executing the demolition. A double-decker bridge will rise in its place, restoring — and upgrading — the crucial east-west link across the railway tracks.
