Mumbai: BMC’s New Integrated Waste Collection System Triggers Sanitation Problems In G-South And G-North Wards

Mumbai, August 7, 2026: The BMC’s new integrated solid waste collection system has triggered sanitation issues in parts of G-South and G-North wards, with delayed garbage lifting during the transition phase leaving several areas with overflowing waste, foul odour, and hygiene concerns.

BMC Opposition Leader Kishori Pednekar blamed poor planning, ineffective manpower deployment, and lack of monitoring for the disruption, alleging that the new contractor, Metro Waste, has failed to provide proper services. A Shiv Sena (UBT) delegation met G-South ward Assistant Commissioner Swapnaja Kshirsagar on Friday and submitted a memorandum over the issue.

Opposition Alleges Contract Failure

Pednekar alleged that the newly awarded Rs 6,000 crore solid waste management contract had failed at the initial stage, claiming that garbage accumulation has created unhygienic conditions and public anger, especially in G-South and G-North wards.

She warned that if the situation does not improve within two to three days, the party will launch a ‘Kachra Pheko’ (garbage-dumping) protest outside the offices of concerned civic officials.

BMC Says Disruption Is Temporary

However, a senior civic official said the disruption was temporary and occurred due to the transition to the new system. The official added that garbage collection is expected to stabilise within three to four days.

Mumbai generates nearly 7,200 metric tonnes of waste daily. Under the new ward-wise integrated model, a single contractor will manage end-to-end waste operations, including door-to-door collection, transportation, maintenance of community bins, roadside litter bins, segregated dry waste collection, and a dedicated toll-free grievance-redressal system.
