Mumbai: BMC To Spend ₹10.25 Crore On Vehicles For 'Pedestrian First' Anti-Encroachment Drive
The BMC will spend an estimated Rs 10.25 crore to deploy vehicles across Mumbai and its suburbs for one year as part of its ‘Pedestrian First’ campaign. Mumbai, September 1, 2026: As the BMC intensifies its crackdown on footpath encroachments and unauthorised hawkers across Mumbai, contracts for vehicles used to transport discarded material have expired.
The civic body is now appointing new contractors to deploy vehicles across the city and suburbs for one year, at a total estimated cost of Rs 10.25 crore.
The move comes as part of the 'Pedestrian First' campaign, launched by the BMC last month to reclaim footpaths connecting railway and Metro stations, schools, colleges, hospitals, civic and government offices, religious places and other high-footfall areas.
The drive targets encroachments, unauthorised structures, hawker obstructions, stored materials, signboards, banners and other obstacles that restrict pedestrian movement.
New Vehicle Contracts Planned
The earlier contracts for vehicles deployed in the city area expired on July 9, while those for the western suburbs ended on July 24. To ensure uninterrupted enforcement, the BMC will hire 27 vehicles for the city and 49 for the western suburbs for another year.
The contracts provide for 9,555 trips in the city and 17,855 trips in the western suburbs, at Rs 3,050 and Rs 3,042 per trip, respectively.
For the city, M/s Infra Transproject has been selected to provide 27 vehicles at a cost of Rs 3.12 crore. In the western suburbs, M/s S.D. Shirole Transport will provide 49 vehicles for Rs 5.65 crore. In the eastern suburbs, the BMC has proposed a Rs 1.48-crore contract to M/s Mak Envirotech and Solutions for similar services.
