Maharashtra Transport Unions To Hold Crucial Meeting In Vashi Over E-Challan Policy; Statewide Strike On The Cards

A meeting of several major transport unions from across Maharashtra is scheduled to be held on August 11, 2025, at Mathadi Bhavan in Vashi, to decide the future course of action regarding the Government’s contentious e-challan policy. Described as a "decisive gathering" by organizers, the meeting is expected to culminate in the announcement of a potential statewide strike.

Transport associations representing a wide spectrum of services including goods carriers, private buses, and school transport are expected to participate. The School Bus Owners’ Association has already confirmed its involvement in the protest movement.

Broad Representation from Transport Sector

“Despite repeated assurances from the Government over the past few months, no tangible steps have been taken to resolve the issues related to the e-challan system,” said Anil Garg, Chairman of the School Bus Owners’ Association. According to Garg, the current system has caused significant operational hurdles and financial strain for drivers and operators across the transport sector.

The e-challan system, which automates traffic fine issuance, has faced severe criticism from transporters who argue that the system lacks transparency, often results in unjust penalties, and affects their day-to-day operations.

Criticism of E-Challan System

In an earlier move aimed at addressing these grievances, the State Government constituted a high-level committee in the first week of July to facilitate structured dialogue between stakeholders. The State Transport Commissioner was appointed as the chairperson of the committee, while the Joint Transport Commissioner (Enforcement-2) was designated as its Member Secretary. Representatives from various government departments and transporter unions were also included in the panel.

Frustration Over Lack of Progress

The committee was tasked with submitting a detailed report within a month. However, no report has been made public as of yet, leading to growing frustration and renewed unrest within the transport community.
