India’s First Bullet Train Tunnel Construction Advances With Key Underground Works Underway

Mumbai: The underground stretch of India's first bullet train corridor has entered a critical construction phase, with drainage systems, waterproofing membranes, and concrete lining work now underway inside the fully excavated five-kilometre New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) tunnel between Ghansoli and Shilphata in Maharashtra.

The 21 kilometre tunnel, the longest on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor runs from Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai to Shilphata. With excavation of the NATM portion complete, specialised gantries are now casting the drainage layer, installing waterproof membranes, placing reinforcement bar cages, and pouring the final concrete lining that gives the tunnel its permanent structural integrity. Equipment rooms to support operations and maintenance are also being developed inside the tunnel.

The broader project is moving at pace. As of March 29, 343 km of viaduct and 434 km of pier work stand completed out of the total 508-km corridor. Over 5.6 lakh noise barriers have been installed across 280 km, while 360 track-km of RC track bed and more than 6,900 OHE masts covering 159 route-km are in place. Two of seven mountain tunnels in Palghar district have achieved breakthrough. Station superstructures across Gujarat are at an advanced stage, and slab casting at the Mumbai underground station is in progress.
