The Mumbai Metropolitan Region is set for a major infrastructure shift as tunnelling work begins on the ambitious Thane Borivali Twin Tunnel project. According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, the project promises to drastically reduce travel time between the two key suburbs, reshaping how the city moves.
Travel Time To Drop Sharply
At present, the 23 kilometre journey between Thane and Borivali takes anywhere between 60 to 90 minutes, largely due to heavy congestion on Ghodbunder Road. Once completed, the new tunnel route will bring this travel time down to just 15 minutes, offering a faster and more reliable commute.
The project, which began on May 19, 2023, is expected to be completed by May 2028.
Cutting Edge Technology Beneath A Green Zone
Stretching across 11.84 kilometres, including 10.25 kilometres of twin tunnels, the project passes beneath the ecologically sensitive Sanjay Gandhi National Park. To minimise environmental impact, construction is being carried out using advanced Tunnel Boring Machines.
Leading the effort is Nayak, India’s largest single shield hard rock TBM, with another machine, Arjuna, set to be deployed soon. Authorities say this technology ensures safe, efficient and low disturbance excavation.
Safety And Smart Infrastructure
Each tunnel will include three lanes, including a dedicated emergency lane. Cross passages will be built every 300 metres to enhance safety.
The tunnels will also be equipped with modern ventilation systems, firefighting equipment, smoke detectors and LED based information systems, ensuring a secure and well monitored travel experience for commuters.
A Long Term Vision For Mumbai
Implemented by MMRDA, the project also includes connecting roads linking the Western Express Highway in Borivali and Ghodbunder Road in Thane. Once operational, it is expected to ease traffic congestion, reduce air and noise pollution and support sustainable urban growth.
More than just a connectivity upgrade, the Thane Borivali Twin Tunnel is being seen as a long term investment designed to support Mumbai’s infrastructure needs for the next century.
