Mumbai, August 21, 2026: Former Mayor and Shiv Sena (UBT) senior corporator Vishakha Raut is set to lose her BMC seat after the Palghar Caste Scrutiny Committee rejected her Other Backward Class (OBC) certificate. Till now, four corporators have faced disqualification over invalid caste validity certificates.

Raut’s election from OBC-reserved Ward 191 in Dadar is under threat after the Palghar Caste Scrutiny Committee cancelled her OBC certificate on Friday following a complaint against its validity.

The order is expected to reach the BMC by Monday, paving the way for formal action against her corporator post. Raut has rejected the challenge to her OBC status, saying her family’s ancestral village is in Palghar district.

Dadar Election Under Threat

Raut represents the politically significant Dadar–Shivaji Park area, where she retained the seat for Shiv Sena (UBT) in a tightly fought contest against Priya Sarvankar, daughter of former MLA Sada Sarvankar. Raut secured 13,236 votes, defeating Sarvankar by a wafer-thin 197-vote margin.

The contest was particularly closely watched as only two candidates were in the fray, leaving virtually no scope for vote-splitting. The narrow victory made the ward one of the closest contests in the BMC elections.

While talking to media persons, Raut said she will appeal the caste scrutiny committee’s order before the Konkan Bhavan Commissioner within the stipulated three-month period. Raut said she would consider moving court depending on the outcome of the appeal.

Several have since taken the matter to court.
