Mumbai’s clinics, nursing homes, hospitals, maternity homes and diagnostic centres will face intensive inspections as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a special drive to check compliance with health, safety and regulatory norms. Teams constituted by the civic health department will inspect clinical establishments across the city and take action against those found violating prescribed rules.

State Health Department Orders Special Inspection Drive Across Maharashtra

The campaign follows directions from the state Health Department for a special inspection drive covering clinical establishments across Maharashtra. The BMC teams will also inspect sonography centres and other healthcare facilities to assess patient safety, essential infrastructure and compliance with applicable laws.

According to the state Health Department’s circular, inspections will cover compliance with the Clinical Establishments-related regulations, PCPNDT Act, MTP Act, ART Act, Biomedical Waste Management Rules, fire safety norms and FDA regulations. Teams will also verify whether mandatory facilities and safety standards are being maintained.

Violating Establishments To Face Action Under Relevant Laws

Officials have been instructed to document violations and prepare reports in the prescribed format. Establishments found flouting norms will face action under the relevant laws.

The inspection teams will prepare daily progress reports detailing the number of establishments inspected, the number found violating various regulations and the observations recorded during inspections. The reports will have to be signed by the concerned officials and submitted daily to the Assistant Health Officer (Nursing Homes).

The Assistant Health Officer will forward the reports to the Executive Health Officer, who will subsequently submit them to the Deputy Director of the Directorate of Health Services.

According to a senior BMC officer, the drive would also help identify quacks and illegal nursing homes operating in Mumbai and its suburbs. “The inspections will provide accurate information about such establishments, making it easier for the civic administration to initiate action against them,” said the official.

The drive is aimed at strengthening regulatory oversight of private healthcare establishments and ensuring that patients receive treatment in facilities equipped with the required infrastructure and operating in accordance with statutory safety and healthcare norms.
