Brunei: Brunei has officially confirmed that Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on Monday, March 31 as the Shawwal crescent moon was not sighted in the country today. Eid al-Fitr also marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar’s 10th month, Shawwal.
The crescent moon is expected to be visible to the naked eye tomorrow (Sunday). However, even if the crescent moon is not visible to the naked eye tomorrow (Sunday) Eid-Al-Fitr will still be celebrated on Monday.
Islam follows a lunar calendar, which means that holidays and the beginning of new months are solely determined based on the moon’s sightings. Months can be either 29 or 30 days long, depending on such sightings.
Muslims in the country will observe the last and 30th fast on Sunday concluding the holy month of Ramadan which begun in March 2.
