International Para Swimmer Satyendra Singh Lohia Expresses Disappointment Over Rahul Gandhi's Remark, Demands Clarification

Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi faced strong criticism from International Para Swimmer Satyendra Singh Lohia for using ‘derogatory’ term for divyangs during his recent address in Bhopal.

The Padma Shri awardee Lohiya took to his official X handle and opined that Gandhi’s comment was hurtful and disrespectful towards persons with disabilities.

Expressing disappointment over Gandhi’s remark Lohiya wrote, “You are a respected national leader, and I have personally admired you for a long time. But hearing the word ‘langda’ in your recent speech was deeply painful.”

‘Term is illegal’

Lohia emphasised that the term is not only insensitive but also legally inappropriate. He cited the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, which discourages the use of such derogatory terms. 

“This word is now considered offensive and has been removed from official vocabulary. The law was passed by the Indian Parliament to ensure respect and dignity for persons with disabilities,” he stated.

He further noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had encouraged the use of the more respectful term “Divyang”, which highlights the strengths of persons with disabilities instead of their limitations.

Lohiya demands clarification

“I don’t know in what context you used the word, but I request you to give a clarification. Please be sensitive to the dignity and emotions of the disabled community. We are also citizens of this country, and we deserve equal rights and respect,” Lohia added.

This comment was reportedly made by Rahul Gandhi on June 3 during a meeting with district and block Congress leaders in Bhopal. In his speech, Gandhi said, “Now we must separate race horses from wedding horses,” and allegedly used the offensive term while referring to internal party matters.
