Indore (Madhya Pradesh): In a significant step towards expanding access to life-saving procedures, Super Speciality Hospital will now perform at least two kidney transplants every month, announced Dr Arvind Ghanghoria, Dean of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College, on the eve of National Organ Donation Day.
The announcement came during an awareness programme held to mark “Angdaan Jan Jagran Diwas”, aimed at promoting organ donation under the NOTTO-SOTTO government network.
Dr Ghanghoriasaid that until now, the hospital had conducted only two kidney transplants in the past two years. “This new initiative will benefit thousands of patients on transplant waiting lists and marks a major operational shift for the hospital,” he said.
Held for the 15th consecutive year, the awareness drive featured medical experts who explained the critical need for organ donors. Dr Ashish Goyal, medical superintendent of the hospital, emphasised the importance of early identification of brain-dead patients or those on ventilator support with functioning organs. With timely consent from families, such patients can become potential organ donors, he said.
Nephrology specialists at the event said that a single organ donor can save up to eight lives, and that improved transplant frequency is key to reducing mortality from organ failure.
