Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Madhya Pradesh High Court, Jabalpur bench, ordered the dismantling of Indore Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), on Wednesday.
Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava also welcomed the High Court’s decision. He stated, "The Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s announcement would be fulfilled. We will soon proceed with the removal of BRTS."
Three months ago, CM Mohan Yadav had stated that BRTS was causing inconvenience to the public and would be removed, during his visit to Indore.
The BRTS corridor in Indore stretches for 11.5 km from Niranjanpur to Rajiv Gandhi Statue. Two public interest litigations (PILs) were filed in the Indore bench of the High Court, which were later transferred to the main bench in Jabalpur. After the hearings, the High Court has now given its verdict in favor of removing BRTS.
Students and working-class disappointed
The BRTS in Indore was constructed at a cost of ₹300 crore. The route connects several educational institutions, hospitals, and corporate offices. Hence, the major group of beneficiaries of i-bus are students and the young working-class population.
Bhopal BRTS removed last year
Last year, Bhopal ISBT was also removed by Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC). The execution duration was 180 days from the issuance of the work order.
In the project, four stretches of the corridor, including Misrod to AMPRI (6.40 km), Roshanpura to Kamla Park (1.42 km), Collectorate to Lalghati (1.73 km) and Halalpur to Sehore Naka (3.81 km), were removed.
