Bangkok: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday, April 4, held bilateral talks with Bangladesh Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the sixth BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Thailand.

The bilateral meeting comes after Bangladesh requested a discussion to address the ongoing differences between the two nations, although PM Modi’s schedule in Thailand had not originally indicated such a meeting.

During the talks, PM Modi emphasised India’s support for a democratic, stable, and inclusive Bangladesh. He also raised concerns over the safety of minorities, including Hindus in Bangladesh.

Strengthening Relations With Bangladesh

In a statement given to ANI, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri shared that PM Modi emphasised India’s commitment to fostering a positive and constructive relationship with Bangladesh, urging both sides to avoid any rhetoric that could harm bilateral relations.

"The PM also urged that any rhetoric that vitiates the environment is best avoided. On the border strict enforcement of the law and prevention of illegal border crossing are necessary to maintain border security and security. The PM also underlines India's concerns over the safety and security of minorities, including Hindus in Bangladesh," Misri said.

Sheikh Hasina's Extradition Request

When questioned about Bangladesh's formal request for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina, Misri acknowledged it saying, “Bangladesh has made an official request concerning Sheikh Hasina. However, it would not be appropriate to provide further details on this matter at this time.”

India's Support for Maynmar

Speaking about PM Modi’s meeting with Myanmar's Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Misri shared that the PM expressed India's solidarity with Myanmar. “The PM conveyed to the Senior General that India, as the first responder, stands with Myanmar during this crisis and is prepared to provide more material assistance as needed,” he told ANI.

Misri also stressed the importance of Myanmar's democratic restoration through credible elections, underscoring India’s commitment to supporting the neighboring nation in its time of need.
