Bhubaneswar: A recent dolphin census in Odisha has recorded a thriving population of 710 dolphins across various wildlife divisions, marking a major success in marine conservation. Conducted over several months and completed in mid-March, the survey highlights a significant increase in dolphin numbers, reflecting the effectiveness of ongoing conservation efforts.

Two species dominated the count: the Humpback Dolphin, with 498 individuals, and the Irrawaddy Dolphin, numbering 188. The presence of these species, particularly the Irrawaddy Dolphin, which thrives in freshwater habitats, indicates a healthy and diverse marine ecosystem.

The Rajnagar Forest Division emerged as a key dolphin habitat, recording the highest population with 505 individuals. Chilika Lake, one of India's largest coastal lagoons, accounted for 174 dolphins, reinforcing its status as a crucial marine biodiversity hotspot. Other regions such as Berhampur (13), Puri (7), Balasore (7), and Bhadrak (4) also contributed to the overall count.

The census also documented smaller populations of Bottlenose Dolphins (16) and Spinner Dolphins (8), further showcasing the region's marine diversity. Environmentalists view these findings as a strong indicator of improved water quality and the success of conservation initiatives.

A marine biologist involved in the study noted, "The rising dolphin numbers reflect the dedication of various stakeholders, from local communities to government agencies, in preserving Odisha’s marine life."

Despite these promising results, experts stress the need for sustained conservation efforts. They urge the government to enforce stricter environmental laws, curb pollution, and protect key habitats like Chilika Lake and the Rajnagar Forest Division from human-induced threats. Ensuring long-term sustainability through habitat preservation and policy enforcement remains critical for maintaining this upward trend in dolphin populations.

This census not only affirms Odisha’s rich marine biodiversity but also underscores the ongoing responsibility to safeguard these ecosystems for future generations.
