New Delhi: A passport is a mandatory document for visiting abroad. Police verification is one of the important steps involved in issuing a passport. This process makes sure that the applicant’s details are correct and there are no criminal records associated with him/her. However, several cases in the past have surfaced where cops were reported to have taken money for verification.
Recently, one of the X users, Abhishek Sharma, asked a query from the Uttar Pradesh Police about whether a cop can demand money for passport verification. Responding to Sharma's query the UP Police asked the X user to report the matter with details of the police personnel if money is demanded from him and assured to take necessary action.
X Users' Query Regarding Police Verification Of Passport:
Response By UP Police:
"There is no need to give money to any police officer for passport verification, if anyone demands money then please inform us the name and posting place of the said police personnel along with the name and application number of the applicant, necessary action will be taken," the UP Police replied.
Notably, police verification is necessary for the renewal of passport or making new passport. It is a process where the local police verify the applicant’s identity, address, and other background details.
Police verification is crucial to ensure that passports should not be issued to persons with criminal backgrounds. The verification process involves a cop visiting the applicant’s residence to make sure that the details provided in the passport by the individual are correct.
Meanwhile, no police verification is required in certain cases, such as if the applicant is a government employee with a valid certificate.
