'Beaten, Eggs Thrown & Clothes Torn': TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee Assaulted By Locals During Sonarpur Visit To Meet Post-Poll Victims' Families - VIDEO

Sonpur: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP and former CM Mamata Banerjee's nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, was allegedly beaten up, his clothes torn, and eggs thrown by locals during his visit to West Bengal's Sonarpur, when he went to meet the families of post-poll violence-affected victims on Saturday.

A video has surfaced showing several locals heckling and beating the TMC national general secretary. Banerjee was soon escorted out of the area with a police helmet.

"It's all BJP-sponsored. Look what they have done. This is their example of democracy. It hasn't even been a month, and the police are nowhere to be seen," he said, speaking on the incident.

Banerjee's convoy came under attack as protesters hurled stones and eggs at the TMC leader, according to police.

The visit marked Banerjee's first major public appearance since the TMC's defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections 26 days ago. The crowds who confronted Banerjee reportedly raised slogans including "chor, chor" against him.

TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien condemned the attack on X.

"WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW IN BENGAL The Lok Sabha Leader of the second largest Opposition party @AITCofficial went to visit the family of a person murdered by BJP in post poll violence. @abhishekaitc was lynched and attacked by a few BJP supporters. Life at risk. Where are the police ? Why was security withdrawn on the day of counting ? Let the Home Minister answer," O Brien posted.
