Mutiny, currently in theatres, is Jason Statham's latest action thriller film directed by Jean-François Richet. After his billionaire industrialist boss is murdered in front of him, Cole Reed (Jason) is set up to take the fall for the crime - leaving him on the run as he works to uncover an international conspiracy.
Opposite Jason is Annabelle Wallis as Angie Ellis, supporting him in his perilous journey. Annabelle is known for her role in The Tudors (2009–2010) Peaky Blinders (2013–2019), X-Men: First Class (2011), Annabelle (2014), The Mummy (2017) and Mercy (2026). Interestingly, what people have forgotten is Annabelle's stint in Bollywood. She was seen in Dil Jo Bhi Kahey...(2005), which starred none other than...Amitabh Bachchan!
In an emailer with us, Annabelle tells us about being part of the actioner Mutiny. Excerpts:
What drew you to the role of Angie and to doing an action film?
I had been craving a role in that action space. Angie reminded me of Sandra Bullock in Speed. She’s thrown into a mess but remains charming and feminine — powerful, strong, dynamic — without adopting any male qualities. It was an amazing opportunity coupled with working with one of the biggest stars in the world in Jason Statham. It felt like a sure bet.
What did shooting on a practical set bring to the experience?
It was so special to be able to shoot on a practical set. It felt like old school filmmaking. You could feel the grit and the grime — it was lived in, in a way you just can't recreate on a stage. The elements were also a factor. One day it's flat and you can stand on two legs and deliver lines, and the next day it's windy and all of a sudden the floor literally falls away from you. So you have to adapt; I’m sure half of us look drunk on screen!
How did you prepare physically for the action in Mutiny?
I always want to do more, especially as we had one of the best stunt teams in the world. I am fortunate in that I love sport and am always active. I feel, as an actor, your body is a tool for your work, so you need it to be ready. When I knew I was coming onto Mutiny, I started doing weights for the first time — which I really enjoyed — and more cardio, just so I could have more dexterity in my body and be ready for anything.
What was your experience of filming in Malta?
We were so lucky to be in Malta, it’s stunning and has such an incredibly rich cinematic history. We got the chance to sail past the Gladiator set, where they also shot Troy and Game of Thrones. It’s beautiful to be somewhere that is so inviting and to be spoiled by the great food and restaurants. I think it's a really special place, and I will always remember the crew and the warmth and welcome of the people.
How important was the costume in shaping Angie’s character?
Loulou is such a gifted costume designer. Sometimes you can watch things and there isn’t enough integrity to the costume. I was very, very happy with mine. It really tells us about her. It’s tomboy-ish, but it has these feminine aspects. We talked about women in these worlds, and there's often a trend to make them more masculine, which is something I really fought against. The strongest women I know are divinely feminine.
