Mumbai: The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) celebrated its 86th Convocation on August 22, 2026, marking the conferral of degrees to 1,377 students across its four campuses, including the inaugural undergraduate batch of Analytics and Sustainability Studies. The ceremony, held as the institute enters its 90th year, featured Dr. C. S. Pramesh, Director of Tata Memorial Hospital, as the Chief Guest.

Delivering the presidential address, TISS Chancellor Prof. D. P. Singh delivered a stark warning on the ethical implications of artificial intelligence. Using the allegory of Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocean), Prof. Singh described AI as a process generating both Amrit (nectar) and Halahal (poison).

He cautioned against three key risks: cognitive atrophy from over-relying on automated thinking, the perpetuation of historical biases present in training data, and the erosion of unrecorded indigenous wisdom. Urging graduates to act as Neelkanth processing the technological risks without surrendering human agency, Prof. Singh emphasised that while technology delivers speed, human values must govern its direction.

Annual Report 2025-26

Presenting the Annual Report for 2025–2026, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Badri Narayan Tiwari outlined major strategic initiatives under the 'TISS Bharat' and 'TISS Global' frameworks. Highlighting academic modernization aligned with the National Education Policy, Prof. Tiwari announced the establishment of the Viksit Bharat Vichar Kendra, a multi-funded think tank for evidence-based policy research and a new partnership with IIT Bombay to set up a Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Society under the Ratan Tata School of Analytics.

TISS Global expanded its international footprint this year, building partnerships across Nepal, Zambia, Brazil, the US, and the UK, while enrolling 51 full-time international students.

Statistics of admission for degree programmes

The institute reported admitting 1,520 students across 57 degree programmes through its newly consolidated TISS Admissions Office out of nearly 18,000 applications. The event concluded with leadership reiterating TISS’s commitment to community-driven development, institutional accountability, and interdisciplinary public service as it builds toward its 2036 centenary roadmap.
