Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): A consumer allegdly received an electricity bill of over Rs 34 crore in Shiv Vihar Colony, Gwalior.

On receiving information of the irregularity, the electricity department immediately revised the bill and rectified it to the original bill amounting to around Rs 1300 only.

When the consumer complained to the officials of the distribution company, it was found that the meter reader had entered the service number of the reading instead of the unit reading.

Consumer Priyanka Gupta was shocked after receiving the bill. In contrast, her father-in-law had to be admitted in the hospital complaining of high blood-pressure.

According to reports, the house is registered on the name of Priyanka Gupta, she is a housewife and her husband Sanjeev Kankane is a lawyer. Sanjeev said that the electricity department had sent the bill of Rs 34195325293.

On checking, it was found that the meter reader instead of entering the consumer's reading, had entered the service number. The reading ranges from 100 to 200 or around 300 units, while the service number is of 10 digits. Bill was generated in billions of rupees as soon as the service number was entered.

The General Manager of the electricity company says that this is a human error and action has been taken against the officials concerned. The Assistant Revenue Officer has been suspended and a show-cause notice has been issued to the junior engineer.
