BMW India has filed a design patent for the latest 1 Series hatchback, hinting at its possible return to the Indian market after a long gap. While the car retains the same platform as its predecessor, it has received significant design updates and new features. Unveiled in June 2024, this updated version, referred to as the fourth generation, is essentially a heavily revised model of the earlier 1 Series.

Inside, the BMW 1 Series boasts a completely redesigned cabin, centered around a dual-screen setup. The 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.7-inch infotainment system are seamlessly integrated into one unit, running the latest BMW iDrive system with QuickSelect functionality for an enhanced user experience. On the outside, the design is more in line with BMW's current lineup, featuring a smaller kidney grille, sleeker headlamps, angular tail lamps, and a fresh new bumper. These updates give the 1 Series a modern, dynamic look that aligns with the brand’s latest design language.

The BMW 1 Series comes with a range of engine options, including a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 296 bhp and 400 Nm in the M135 model. The 120 variant offers a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, generating 154 bhp and 240 Nm, while the 120d and 118d variants feature a 2.0-litre diesel engine with 148 bhp and 360 Nm. Both the petrol and diesel engines in the 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre variants are equipped with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. All engines are paired with a 7-speed Steptronic transmission. BMW has also dropped the ‘i’ suffix from the petrol variants in this model.

Starting January 1, 2025, BMW India has implemented a 3% price hike across its entire range. Locally produced models will experience a price increase between Rs 1.3 lakh and Rs 5.5 lakh, depending on the variant. In contrast, imported models from the CBU (Completely Built-Up) lineup will see a steeper price rise under the new rates.

BMW’s manufacturing facility in Chennai assembles ten models, including sedans such as the 2 Series Gran Coupe, 3 Series Long Wheelbase, 5 Series, and 7 Series, along with SUVs like the X1, X3, X5, and X7. The locally made range also includes the performance-oriented M340i. For imported vehicles, BMW offers a range of electric models, including the i4, i5, i7, i7 M70, iX1, and iX. The CBU lineup also features high-performance M models, such as the Z4 M40i, M2 Coupe, M4 Competition, M4 CS, M8 Competition Coupe, the flagship XM, and the recently launched M5.
