Beijing, August 22, 2026: A humanoid robot developed by Chinese smartphone maker Honor has run 100 metres in 9.32 seconds, beating the human world record held by Jamaican sprinting great Usain Bolt, China's state broadcaster reported on Saturday.

The robot, dubbed Lightning, reached a peak speed of 14.5 metres per second during a preparatory test event for the second World Humanoid Robot Games, which opened in Beijing on Saturday. Its 9.32-second performance surpassed the men's 100-metre world record of 9.58 seconds set by Bolt at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in 2009, Reuters reports.

Faster Than Bolt

The performance puts the rapid development of humanoid robots into sharp focus. While Lightning's run was a test involving a robot rather than a human athletics competition, its ability to cover 100 metres faster than the standing human world record offers a striking example of advances in robotics.

China has been promoting humanoid robots as a strategic emerging industry. Policymakers and companies are betting that advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and hardware will accelerate the use of such robots in manufacturing, logistics and consumer applications.

Built For Speed

Lightning has already demonstrated its speed over a much longer distance. The robot won the 21-km Beijing half marathon in April, completing it in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, faster than the elite men's human world-record pace.

At the half marathon, Lightning stood 169 cm tall and had 95-cm legs. Researchers have since lengthened its legs by 10 cm to 1.05 metres ahead of the World Humanoid Robot Games, China Central Television reported.

The changes to Lightning, along with its latest 100-metre performance, underline how developers are pushing humanoid robots towards greater speed and physical capability. With China placing increasing emphasis on the sector, the robot's record-beating test run also provides a glimpse of how quickly the technology is progressing.
