The newly launched streaming platform, JioHotstar, formed after the merger of Viacom18’s JioCinema and Star India’s Disney+ Hotstar into JioHotstar, will not offer free streaming of IPL matches.
JioHotstar, which serves over 50 crore users with entertainment and live sports, has introduced a hybrid subscription model, limiting free access for cricket fans across India.
According to a Reuters report, fans can watch only a few minutes of an IPL match for free. Once the free limit is reached, they will be directed to a subscription page, with plans starting at ₹149.
Previously, JioCinema streamed IPL matches for free after securing rights for five years from 2023 for $3 billion. However, starting in 2025, viewers will need a paid subscription to watch full matches.
This shift comes after Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance and Walt Disney merged their India media assets in an $8.5 billion deal last year.
