Pune: Condolences pour in for Pimpri-Chinchwad MLA Lakshman Jagtap; he passed away after battling cancer
Lakshman Jagtap (59) was admitted to a private hospital in Baner when he passed away. His health condition had deteriorated.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Pimpri-Chinchwad, Lakshman Jagtap passed away after prolonged illness on Tuesday, January 3.
Jagtap (59) was admitted in a private hospital in Baner when he passed away. Reportedly, he had been suffering from cancer.
According to reports, his condition was said to be improving over the past few days and was discharged from hospital but was re-hospitalized due to deteriorating condition, said a report.
Jagtap's Political career
He began his political career by first contesting Pimpri-Chinchwad civic polls. Following that in 1986 he won on a Congress ticket and he joined NCP in 1999.
He held the post of Mayor of Pimpri Chinchwad twice and was also the Chairman of the Standing Committee once.
He became a member of the Legislative Council in 2004. In 2009, he left the NCP and tarted working as an independent candidate.
In 2014, he contested the Lok Sabha elections from the Farmer Workers Party. However, he was defeated by Shiv Sena's Srirang Barane.
After this, Jagtap joined BJP. He contested the 2014 assembly elections. He won and subsequently won the MLA elections in 2019 as well.
Condolences pour in
"Chinchwad Assembly Constituency MLA Laxman Jagtap passed away. He was known as a very popular leader in his area. We all share in the grief that has befallen the Jagtap family due to his death. A heartfelt tribute," wrote NCP leader Supriya Sule in a tweet condoling his death.
Thackeray scion Aaditya too tweeted his condolences. He wrote, "Heard the news sad demise of Chinchwad Vidhan Sabha MLA Shri Laxman Jagtap. Heartfelt tributes to him."
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also condoled his death saying that he was committed to upliftment of his Constituency and was a people's representative.
"Heard the news of the death of Chinchwad Assembly Constituency MLA Laxman Jagtap. He was known as a people's representative who was constantly working for the upliftment of the Constituency. May God rest his soul and give strength to the Jagtap family to recover from their suffering," he wrote.
